But Melbourne haven’t beaten Collingwood on the Queen’s Birthday since 2007 when seven goals from mercurial forward Russell Robertson steered the Dees to a 13-point triumph. So what about this year, can Melbourne pull off an upset victory? They have made a real case for being the AFL’s most enigmatic team in season 2011 with some massive wins interspersed with poor losses. If Melbourne can produce the same intensity, endeavour and ability they showed in beating Essendon in the last round, then the answer is yes. If they dish up what they did against Carlton, North Melbourne or St Kilda, then the answer is a resounding no.

Melbourne can draw confidence that in addition to the draw on Queen’s Birthday 2010, they pushed Collingwood to a one-point loss earlier in that same season. But that Pies side was a team on the way to a premiership, the one they face on Monday is the reigning premier. Collingwood hasn’t done much wrong in season 2011 apart from that blemish against Geelong and have moved on since that result with good wins over Adelaide, West Coast and St Kilda.

If anything they look stronger this year with the return of Chris Tarrant, the inclusion of Andrew Krakouer and the shift of Davis from forward line to defence. But they will be without two of their best players against Melbourne, Thomas (suspended) and Swan, not to mention the fact they are already without top ruckman Darren Jolly. Saying that, Collingwood still has the luxury of fielding at least 15 of their premiership-winning team, so they should prove too strong for the Demons, who will have a crack for a half. Collingwood by 26 points.
